Biography

After being asked by his wife in 2019 to create a pair of earrings, Eugene Kabluitok not only fulfilled her request, but kept on creating. Thus began his label “Siqiniq St. Design”, a line of earrings and apparel based out of his hometown of Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet), NU. Many of Kabluitok's designs include t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts adorned with imagery of traditional Inuit hunting implements, often designed collaboratively with his wife. Although the line may have begun in 2019, Kabluitok’s artistic practice has developed over much of his life, beginning with the production finely crafted knives, which he still creates to this day.

“I’ve always been into making crafts,” he says, “Years ago I started off with making uluit and knives. I’ve always been artsy, crafty and handy.” [1]

Today, Kabluitok continues to develop earring designs from baleen, bone and ivory. Among his best-known designs are diamond-shaped earrings inspired by the waist tie toggles of an amautik and all his works are typically sold on the digital marketplace on platforms such as Facebook or Instagram.
