Biography

Hannah Tooktoo is a multidisciplinary artist from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, QC. Tooktoo has a passion for telling stories of internal and societal challenges, as well as stories of pride and resilience in Indigenous communities, heritage and people. Art is a form of therapy for Tooktoo, allowing for in depth internal exploration of issues, a synchronous revealing and healing of emotional wounds. [1]

Tooktoo has shone a light on important issues both in her art and in her activism. In 2019 she spent 2 months bicycling across Canada, bringing awareness to the the high suicide rates amongst Inuit and Indigenous communities. [1] “What can I do to heal myself and what can I do to do my part?” She says of why she took on this journey. [2]

Utilizing a wide skill set acquired over a life surrounded by an artistic family, practice, and time at Dawson College’s Visual Arts Program, Tooktoo’s reflection of Inuit life is expertly crafted. Inspired by artists within her own family, as well as artists such as Sheila Watt-Cloutier, Dawn Forrest, Tanya Mesher Jones and Niap. Tooktoo is able to list many amazing Inuit artists that guide her work. [1]

With an emphasis on representation of her Inuit culture, Tooktoo’s work regularity features local flora, berries, wildlife, legends and people. Working mainly in paintings, drawings, jewelry and sewing, you can always find exciting new artwork by Hannah Tooktoo on her Instagram and Twitter.
